RTDNA embarks on strategic planning process

RTDNA’s Executive Committee met two weeks ago in Orlando at the Marriott Orlando World Center, the site of #EIJ15 hosted by RTDNA, SPJ and NAHJ. Staff checked out the hotel and sites around Orlando for events such as our opening night reception. The Executive Committee held its January meeting, met in a joint session with SPJ’s Executive Committee to discuss diversity, EIJ programming and partnership opportunities.

We also began working on RTDNA’s next strategic planning process. The consensus of the group is that RTDNA is in a very good position right now, but it’s also a good time to begin thinking about our future. We’ll begin by asking our board members and state coordinators to survey people between now and early April to learn such information as your reasons for joining professional associations and what you want out of memberships.

We’re working with Denver facilitator Tim Daniel of Organization Performance Group. The Executive Committee, committee chairs and RTDNA staff will meet with Daniel for two full days at the end of July to create a working document with action items that will go to the full board for approval.

RTDNA has done strategic planning twice before, once in 1998 and once in 2008. In 1998 the group created a list of core values. In 2008 the association had to change to survive. The name change from RTNDA to RTDNA came then. We’re looking for the next generation of news leaders to help shape RTDNA now.

If you’re called upon to answer our survey please take the time to speak with us and help shape our future. And if you’d like to proactively take the survey please contact your region’s board member.
