RTDNA Honors Winners of 2013 National Edward R. Murrow Awards

The Radio Television Digital News Association honored hundreds of outstanding journalists Monday night. Award recipients demonstrated the standards of excellence that Edward R. Murrow set for the journalism industry. This year there were 3,600 entries, which is the most entries in the history of the event. The night highlighted great broadcast and digital journalism.
“We have our regional directors that start out with their judging panels in their regions, because all of the entries are organized by region,” said RTDNA Executive Director Mike Cavender. “Once regional winners are chosen, they move on to the national competition, which is what’s being honored here tonight.”
The award ceremony represents the best and brightest reporters and newsrooms in the business. As the evening progressed, attendees heard and watched portions of the winning work. Each piece exemplified a compelling story, capturing moments of day-to-day life.
Natalie Morales, one of the presenters tonight, said she loves the diversity in the journalism industry.
“My favorite part of journalism is the challenge every day we are being tasked with,” said Morales. “Being up on all the stories of the day, and I feel it’s homework every night, but it’s also doing public service. I think it’s such a great thing.”
Among the recipients were NBC Nightly News, CNN, CBS The Seattle Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and many more. Award winners showed excellence in hard news journalism, breaking news reports, live election coverage, dramatic weather events, investigative reporting, and excellence in sports. Each piece of journalism represented community-wide interests, honoring the highest standards of quality that David R. Murrow set.
David Muir, ABC News Anchor and Correspondent, said it is a privilege to attend these awards.
“I think it is an honor to use [Murrow’s] name every year when we hand out these awards,” said Muir. It reminds us of the people who came before us and set the standards for us.”
The next RTDNA awards event will be the First Amendment Dinner in Washington, DC on March 12, 2014.
