Future-proof your career and newsroom at EIJ18

September 5, 2018 11:00

To succeed in today’s news business, you and your team have to be able to adapt. That’s why September isn’t just back-to-school season for students, but also for news leaders.

If you're the type to adapt and thrive, to never back down from a challenge, passionate about doing more and better journalism and tackling our industry's biggest issues head on, then Excellence in Journalism 2018 is for you, but pre-registration closes today!

EIJ18 is the only meeting of its kind for newsroom managers and their teams: An opportunity to step back from your deadlines, think big picture and bring home ideas you and your newsroom can actually use to future-proof your newsroom.

Join your peer news leaders later this month for three days (or just one) of skill-building, networking, problem solving and some fun, too.

Future-proof your career
Including an expanded News Management program track and a Career Development track, EIJ18 is all about leadership. Learn how to set yourself up for your next career move, develop skills you'll need to lead and even meet your future boss at EIJ, where a dozen major media companies will be recruiting.

Future-proof your newsroom
Life's too short to work with jerks, and newsrooms face enough challenges every day without bad behavior creating toxic cultures. At EIJ18, even the conflict-averse will learn how to create positive workplaces and foster integrity and inclusion from every level. We’ll focus on strategies to rebuild trust and fulfill the business and mission imperatives for improving coverage of our whole communities.

Future-proof your skills
EIJ18 will introduce you to the latest in tech and digital skills (just take a look at the Digital program track and included deep-dive workshops), but also how to get better results from tools you already use and take your core sills like storytelling to the next level. We’ll banish bad news writing (which can hurt your credibility) and dig into how to recognize increasingly convincing mis- and disinformation.

Fun and inspiration
We get together to learn from each other, of course, but also to have fun! Join us to kick off the journalism party of the year with the Opening Night Reception at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens, sponsored by CNN Newsource. And get inspired by Pete Williams and Bill Whitaker, who will be receiving top honors from RTDNA.

Planning your trip
Need that crucial "ok" from your boss? Here's how to get it.

We’ve also got some suggestions to make the most of your time away from the newsroom and insight from a long-time conference goer on maximizing your experience.

Don't forget to book your hotel and travel, too! Baltimore is a quick drive, flight or train ride away for 85% of media markets, and we'll be at the Hilton right on the Inner Harbor. We’ve got a great room rate and when you book through our link you’ll get some additional perks, including 10% off dining and a shot at a registration reimbursement. The room block closes September 6.

We've all heard the tired refrains of "fake news" and the death of local news, but we're journalists and we're not going anywhere. We’ve got big challenges to tackle, but also the passion and drive to find adapt and find creative ways to serve our communities even better through news.

We'll see you at Excellence in Journalism!
