Professional Bio

Sue Kopen Katcef, an award-winning veteran broadcast journalist, is currently a freelance reporter for Maryland Public Television.

Kopen Katcef spent nearly two decades teaching full-time at her alma mater, the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland where she served as the Broadcast Bureau Director of the Merrill College’s Capital News Service for ten years. Her students and their production, “Maryland Newsline”, won dozens of local, regional and national awards.

Prior to coming to the Merrill College of Journalism, Sue was a reporter and anchor for WBAL Radio. Sue has also worked as a reporter for WJZ Television and WCBM/Metromedia Radio.

Sue, a long-time member of RTDNA, is also involved with the Society of Professional Journalists where she served for many years in leadership positions at the local and national levels.

Sue belongs to the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of NATAS (NATAS-NCCB) where she has served on the board and currently is a member (and former chair) of the chapter’s Education Committee.

Sue is also member of the Board of the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters’ Association (CABPA) where she has twice-served as president.

Sue’s reporting has earned honors from RTDNA, the New York Festivals, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters’ Association, the American Bar Association and the Maryland State Bar Association.

Sue has also been honored twice by the NATAS-NCCB chapter: with the chapter’s prestigious Board of Governors Award as well as induction into the chapter’s “Silver Circle” for outstanding contributions to the broadcast industry.

In addition, the Washington, DC Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists honored Sue in 2010 with its “Distinguished Service Award.” And in 2007, Sue was initiated into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.
