RTDNA statement on 2023 Murrow Award

Announced Nov. 8, 2024, the RTDNA Board of Directors has voted to rescind the Network Feature-Length Documentary Edward R. Murrow Award presented in October 2023 to National Geographic for “Retrograde.” This decision was not made lightly. The board first received background information regarding the outcomes of the film as a result of this Washington Post article dated May 22, 2024. RTDNA then conducted its own review into the procedures and practices associated with the filmmaking process thus leading to the final decision to rescind the award.

Since 1971, RTDNA has recognized outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards, and will continue to find ways of evolving the awards process to ensure best practices in journalism are considered.
